How it works

Effa plays soft tones through your headphones, earphones, bone-conduction headphones or the phone's earpiece and estimates the quietest level you can hear at each pitch – separately for each ear.

  1. 1

    Put on your headphones

Wired, Bluetooth and bone-conduction headphones all work. No headphones? Use the phone's earpiece for a simple check.

  2. 2

    Find a quiet spot

Effa measures the background noise, without recording anything, and tells you when it's quiet enough.

  3. 3

Tap when you hear a tone

Soft tones play at different pitches in each ear. You can pause at any time.

  4. 4

    See your results

Get an easy summary and an audiogram-style chart, compare with your age group, and keep a history on your phone.

What you get

Not a medical device

Effa is a hearing check for reference only. It is not a medical device and does not replace an examination by an ENT doctor or audiologist. Results depend on your headphones, volume and surroundings. If you are worried about your hearing, please see a hearing professional.

Your data

Your measurements stay on your phone. If you choose to, you can share anonymous results (age, thresholds, device model, volume, noise level) to help us build correction profiles for popular earphones and improve accuracy for everyone. No account, no email, no advertising ID and no precise location are collected. You can turn sharing off or delete everything in Settings at any time.

Questions

›Is Effa a medical device?

No. Effa is a hearing check for reference only and does not replace an examination by an ENT doctor or audiologist. If your hearing changes suddenly, or you have ear pain, dizziness or ringing that doesn't go away, see a doctor promptly.

›What do I need?

Your phone, headphones or earphones (wired, Bluetooth or bone-conduction) and a quiet room. Without headphones, you can still do a simple check through the phone's earpiece.

›How accurate are the results?

Effa estimates the quietest sound you can hear at each pitch. Every headphone model sounds a little different, so results depend on your headphones, volume and surroundings. Anonymous results shared by users help us build correction profiles for popular models, which makes checks with those models more accurate.

›Does Effa record me through the microphone?

No. Effa uses the microphone only to measure how loud the background noise is. Nothing is recorded, saved or sent.

›What leaves my phone?

Nothing, unless you choose to share. If you're 16 or older and turn on anonymous sharing, your results are uploaded without your name, email or advertising ID. The Privacy Policy lists everything that is shared.

›How do I delete my data?

Open Settings in Effa and tap Delete my data. It removes every result from your phone and from our server. You can also delete a single result from your history.

›Is Effa free?

Yes. Effa is free, has no ads and doesn't need an account.
